The Washington Capitals will take on the Vancouver Canucks tonight
at the Verizon Center. The Capitals are coming off a win against the
Tampa Bay Lightning while the Canucks have 1 win in five games. The
Vancouver Canucks are in deep with penalty and face off problems.
They’re taking way too many penalties which in turn, ends up
being a goal for the other team. Their offense excels on the power
play where their currently ranked sixth. The biggest downer for the
Nucks is their defense which ranks high in goals against and shots
against. Goalie Roberto Luongo hasn’t been himself lately. He’s
currently 3-6 with a 3.01 GAA and he’s let in a total 32 goals
in 9 games. The biggest asset for the Canucks is Daniel Sedin who
has 10 points and he’s got the most shots on net 26. The Canucks
are going to change their style of play by riffling shots on net all
game, hoping to catch a rebound or two. The Canucks were perfect on
the road, but they’re currently enjoying a 2 game road losing
streak.
The Washington Capitals have a team with speed and skill, mixed with
a lot of youth. Last year they were a team with offense and no defense,
now it’s the other way around. Their best reason for a great
defense is the goaltending of Olaf Kolzig, whose 3-2 with a 2.42 GAA.
He recorded his first shutout of this year against a very offensively
talented Carolina Hurricanes. Alexander Ovechkin leads his team with
5 goals and 9 points, while centers Michael Nylander and Nicklas Backstrom
are close behind. The Capitals have a home record of 2-2.
Bottom Line: If the Canucks can stay out of the penalty
box and put more pucks on the net they might be able to pull off a
win. R.Luongo will need to be on his game, with speedy, talented Ovechkin
lurking around.
