Week 15:
San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks
by Dennis "The Viking" Altenburg
Wednesday December 13, 2006 The Seattle Seahawks
know what they have to do on Thursday. And they are fully aware
of how things can turn out. First, Seattle can win the NFC West
with a win over the San Francisco 49ers. That gets them into the
post-season and another try for the Trophy of Vince.
However, there are a few things to consider. Seattle’s run
defense is in the middle of the NFL pack, and now they come up against
the top rusher in the NFC in Frank Gore, the 49ers’ only shining
light this season. San Fran already beat Seattle on Nov 19. Okay,
so the Seahawks didn’t have Matt and Shaun in the lineup that
game, but last week they did when the lowly Cardinals laid a whupping
on Seattle 27-21.
Second, there’s a bigger prize for Seattle to lick their chops
over that might just get them sidetracked in their game against
the 49ers – if the Seahawks win all 3 of their remaining games
AND the New Orleans Saints lose 2, then Seattle takes the #2 seed
and gets a bye in the first round of the playoffs. I’ve watched
a lot of football in my time and know that distractions like that
can take the focus off the task at hand.
There just aren’t enough games left for Seattle to fiddle
around like that, but mark my words, I’ve seen it happen time
and again – if a team looks ahead at the big picture, the
little picture comes up and bites you in the hind quarters.
And get this – if the 49ers win all 3 of their games and the
Seahawks lose all 3 of theirs, then San Francisco can win the NFC
West. Strange days indeed.
