AC Milan and Chelsea Advance in Champions League

Defending champion AC Milan moved into the second round of the Champions League with a 1-1 draw with Benfica on Wednesday while Chelsea routed Rosenborg 4-0 to move into the second round.

One team that still has work to do is nine-time champion Real Madrid after they lost 3-2 loss at Werder Bremen. FC Barcelona, Manchester United, AS Roma, Inter Milan, Sevilla and Arsenal are all in the next round along with AC Milan and Chelsea.  The win by AC Milan was important because Celtic scored a last-minute goal to beat Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 in Glasgow which means Milan moves on. "We started very well in the first half, then they equalized and knowing that a draw would qualify us, we struggled at the end," Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti said. Milan leads the group with 10 points and next faces Celtic, which has nine. Shakhtar has six points and hosts the already-eliminated Benfica, which has four.

Didier Drogba scored the first two of Chelsea's goals at Rosenborg.  Chelsea now has 11 points in the group.  Rosenborg stays second with seven points because Schalke and Valencia played to a 0-0 draw. Schalke will host Rosenborg in two weeks and has five points. Valencia is at Chelsea and has four points. "We played some good football tonight and scored four goals," Chelsea coach Avram Grant said. "We had a lot of chances but what is most important is that we qualified for the next round one game before the end."

Real Madrid and Olympiakos have 8 points each while Werder Bremen now has six points. Lazio trails in the group with five points.  Olympiakos won 2-1 at Lazio in a huge win. Bremen could now advance to the knockout stage if it wins at Olympiakos in the final round. Madrid plays Lazio at home and a draw would be enough to advance.  Bremen will have a tough game at Olympiakos but at least they have a chance. "When you look at the problems we've been fighting all season, the way the team is handling the situation is fantastic," Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf said. "We wanted to get this win to stay in contention and we played a great game, great compliments to my team."
