Striker Didier Drogba got the winner as Chelsea got by Valencia
2-1 in Champions League action. The Group B match was a huge win
for Chelsea and new coach Avram Grant. Chelsea badly needed the
win after losing manager Jose Mourinho two weeks ago. The victory
was much-needed for Grant, whose team lost at Manchester United
in his first league game before drawing 0-0 at home to Fulham. "It
has been two difficult weeks but I told the players they should
stay calm and get on with playing football as that is what they
do best," Grant said,
Germany defeated Brazil 2-0 on Sunday to win their second straight
Women's World Cup. The Germans got goals by Birgit Prinz and Simone
Laudehr. Brazil’s star player Marta had a chance to tie the
score in the second half, but her penalty kick was stopped by German
goalkeeper Nadine Angerer. "After the penalty save, I felt
it was meant to be," Germany coach Silvia Neid said. "We
worked hard for each other. It was a great team performance. It
was important to work against Marta, and we did a good job in pushing
her to the sidelines."
Heavy soccer betting favorite Bayern Munich opened up the 2007-2008
UEFA Cup with a tough 1-0 victory over Portuguese club Belenenses.
Other UEFA Cup favorites were not as successful. Blackburn lost
to Larissa 2-0 while Everton and Bolton both had opening draws.
Tottenham did have a nice start as they won over Anorthosis Famagusta
6-1.
Bayern Munich is favored to win the 2007-2008 UEFA Cup. A total
of 80 teams compete in first round action with Bayern the heavy
favorite to win the Cup at odds of about 4-1. All other teams have
odds of 10-1 or more.
Group B action in Euro 2008 qualifying had last year’s World
Cup finalists Italy and France playing to a 0-0 tie in Milan over
the weekend. It was a devastating tie for Italy that badly needed
a victory. The Italians are now in third place with just four matches
remaining. France leads Group B with 19 points. Scotland, which
beat Lithuania 3-1, is next with 18 points, followed by Italy with
17. Only the top two teams in each of the seven groups qualify along
with co-hosts Austria and Switzerland.
The FIFA Women's World Cup 2007 will be held in China from September
10th through September 30th. 16 nations will participate in the
Women's World Cup finals. The defending Champion is Germany and
they are a threat to win again this year along with the United States
who won in 1991 and 1999.
The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team is in the Round of
16 of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup. They defeated Belgium 2-0 in
their third and final Group E match to advance to the second round.

race is heating up. Currently five Eastern Conference teams are
in position to qualify for the MLS Playoffs which would mean a spot
would be taken away from the Western Conference where only three
