NFL Betting Preview

Denver Broncos (6-8) at San Diego Chargers (9-5)
Monday, 8:00 pm Eastern – ESPN
SBG Global Opening Line: Chargers  - 9 , Total 47

The San Diego Chargers will try for their 5th straight win tonight as they host the Denver Broncos.  The Chargers can clinch the #3 spot in the AFC with a win tonight and a win next week against Minnesota.  The #3 spot is critical since the Chargers could avoid having to play the Patriots until the AFC Championship game.  San Diego has won eight of their last 10 games overall including a 51-14 win over Detroit last week that clinched the AFC West. SBG Global reports that early NFL betting has the public taking Charges at Home.

San Diego is already thinking about avoiding New England for as long as possible in the playoffs. "If you continue to win you get to play the No. 1 seed in the championship game, if things go the way you think they will go," running back LaDainian Tomlinson said.  The Chargers have played both the Patriots and the #2 seed the Indianapolis Colts this season. They beat the Colts but lost to the Patriots. "You're going to have to play them if they continue to win, so it doesn't matter if you play them the week before or in the championship game," Tomlinson said, "You've got to earn the right to play them if they continue to win." Tomlinson started off slowly this year but has caught fire of late.  In the last four games he has averaged 129 yards per game with 5 TD’s on the ground and one receiving. The Chargers are looking like the Super Bowl contender they were thought of before the season began. "We'd like to say we're definitely a contender. We've got to prove it," said Tomlinson, "When you get to the playoffs, it's totally different. You've got more pressure on you and also less room for error, and so you've really got to take advantage of your opportunities. When we get there, that's one thing we're going to talk about."

The Broncos come into Monday’s game out of the playoffs. "It is difficult, but that's life, too," safety John Lynch said. "You're not always on top. The old saying that adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it, we've talked a lot about that. I think you can see a lot about individuals and a team how they respond to it."  The Broncos are missing the playoffs for consecutive seasons for the first time since 2001-2002.  The Broncos are now playing to avoid a losing season. "Your career is based on how you perform and if you don't perform, it'll show on tape and guys will know what type of heart you have," said cornerback Champ Bailey, "We're aware of how (the Chargers) beat us and I know they're going to think that they could do it again. So, we've got to go out and play our game. We're capable of playing well. We've just got to do it."

Which Broncos team shows up tonight is anyone’s guess.  Denver started the season with two straight wins, lost five of their next six, won two straight and now have dropped three of four. "One week it's there; the next week it's not, and you've got to be consistent and do the little things well all the time," Lynch said, "You can't do them some of the time or else you get exposed in this league."

The Chargers have won the last three games against Denver.  They have not won four straight over the Broncos since 1967-68.
