NBA Betting Preview

Dallas Mavericks at Cleveland Cavaliers
Wednesday, 8:05 pm Eastern – ESPN
SBG Global Opening Line: Mavericks -3.5 , Total 186

Two teams with high expectations meet on Wednesday night in Cleveland as the Cavaliers host the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks will try and erase the memory of last year’s first round embarrassing loss against Golden State from their minds while Cleveland will try and prove that last year was not a fluke. Dirk Nowitzki leads a talented Mavericks team while LeBron James carries Cleveland on his back. SBG Global reports that early betting has the public taking Mavericks on the Road.

"You don't want to harp on what you've done wrong, you've got to find ways to move on," Nowitzki said. "But, still, the frustration - I won't forget." The Mavericks won 67 games in the regular season a year ago but it means nothing since they lost in the first round of the playoffs. "Some champion teams have to experience the agony of defeat to move forward," Mavericks coach Avery Johnson said.

The Cavaliers did nothing in the off-season to provide help to LeBron James and it could be more difficult this season with teams keying on the superstar every night. "We didn't do any reshaping," James said candidly. "We didn't do any regrouping. You start to think a little bit, 'How are we going to continue to get better?'" Anderson Varejao and Sasha Pavlovic are not even with the Cavaliers as both players are holding out. Varejao averaged 6.8 points and 6.7 rebounds off the bench while Pavlovic added 9 points per game. "We're worse," James said. "We're not as good as we were if we have those guys. We all know that. Those two guys are a big part of our team. There's no reason to sit here and say we're better without them. Hopefully something happens." James averaged 27.3 points per game last season and will need to do more if Cleveland is to win. James was fourth in the league in scoring, just ahead of Dirk Nowitzki who averaged 24.6 points per game. Cleveland will need excellent play out of center Zydrunas Ilgauskas and they will need point guard Daniel Gibson to play like he did in the playoffs. It also wouldn’t hurt if Larry Hughes occasionally showed up.

SBG Global Current Line: Mavericks -4 (-105), Total 185.5

The Mavericks are not without problems to start the season. Josh Howard, who averaged a career-high 18.9 points last season, was suspended for the first two games of the season because of a fight with Brad Miller in the preseason. The Mavericks are much deeper than Cleveland though and still have Jason Terry and Jerry Stackhouse to help Nowitzki. They also picked up Eddie Jones in the off-season and expect second-round pick Nick Fazekas to score. "When you have a team that's right there it's about being able to handle prosperity - winning 15 games in a row or getting to the finals - but it's also about handling adversity," Johnson said. "When you're not playing as well - when you have a losing streak or you're having a bad four or five games in a playoff series - how are you going to deal with it?"
